Datri – Samyuktha’s Story

Samyuktha was just one and half years when she was diagnosed with Thalassemia Major. It came as a shock to her parents, for whom it was an altogether new word. But their long battle against their daughter’s rare blood disorder was just beginning. For nine years, they consulted eminent doctors who advised blood transfusions, the common treatment for Thalassemia. With the transfusions, she grew healthy and was able to attend school and even got prize for full attendance during those years.

Her courage and determination saw her through nine years, when a doctor advised it was finally time for her BMT. It was an emotionally turbulent time for the family as they tried to prepare financially and emotionally for the procedure.  They considered the matched donor from Germany a God-sent. But imagine the heartbreak when they were told that the donor had backed off. As the fear and anxiety came crashing in, they kept searching for blood stem cell donors in registries with the hospital’s help.
